Laptop part theft is something that scares me a lot. Considering that all my important business and personal files are stored in my computer, it terrifies me to think that it might get stolen someday. In my case, I have no choice. I have to bring my computer with me wherever I go. For people like me, something can be done to keep it secured at least to a certain level just to make it more difficult for a would-be thief to steal my laptop.
Use the Kensington lock
Have you ever noticed a small opening or notch on your laptop and up to this point never figured out what it is for? Have you ever noticed the long metal cables attached to gadgets such cell phones or laptops on display at stores? Since laptops have gotten smaller and smaller in size, it has become easier to steal them. One way to protect your laptop from physical theft is to secure it with a lock-and-cable apparatus attached to the Kensington lock on your laptop. This one small security feature called the Kensington lock or K-Slot is included in most if not all laptops manufactured these days.
You can find the K-Slot on your laptop by checking your laptop manual. Attach it to the security cable and just find something such as a heavy table or a fixed structure where you can attach the cable so that it will make it difficult for the thief to run away with your laptop. This lock provides added security versus physical theft but do not totally depend on it. Like most things, a determined thief with the proper tools can break it.
The Kensington lock just provides an additional level of security. It is not a total solution against physical theft. The best thing to do to secure your laptop is to always be aware and never be careless. If you are in a public place, never leave your laptop alone not even for a brief moment and always be aware of the people around you. Being cautious really helps.
