One of President Obama’s major initiatives will be to bring the US health care system into the 21st century. Although creating electronic health records is a huge step in ‘leveling up’ our health care system to meet modern day information technology standards, there is also the less celebrity concept of implementing high-tech network technology towards health care. It will be one thing for doctors and patients to have access to medical data, and another for them to communicate that data.

Overall, the HTC Touch Diamond and Apple iPhone 3G cannot really be compared to each other. The iPhone offers many different features and technologies than the Touch Diamond. The HTC Touch Diamond is more like other touch phones that are out there, and the iPhone still stands alone. Still, unless Internet speed and music features are important for you to have on your phone, then you are better off getting a cheaper phone. Global warming and climate change is big in the news at present, and calls for a more sustainable way of living are being directed at consumers at every level. By now, unless you live in a cave, you have heard & seen the amazing new iPhone from Apple. The iPhone stands alone in the race of cellular phone manufacturers to bring state of the art technology to a single device that fits in the palm of your hand. I have had the iPhone in my hands and I must say it is absolutely amazing.

In order to understand the decision the 2nd largest cellular phone company made, to initially pass on being the exclusive distributor of the iPhone on Verizon, we must go back to the pre-release of the iPhone prior to June 29th of 2007. It seems Apple had more control in mind of the iPhone on Verizon, than Verizon could stomach. Apple’s initial dealings with Verizon stated dramatic unprecedented variables that included a percentage of monthly service revenues, control over support and service, and even control over distribution. All of which were not advantageous to the Verizon’s CEO’s and share holders, and satellite distributors such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other Verizon outlets. “That would have put our own distribution partners at a disadvantage” to Apple and Verizon stores, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. Another hitch was customer care, if an iPhone became unstable and went haywire, Apple wanted sole discretion to decide whether to replace or repair the phone. “They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat …on hardware and service support,” Gerace says.

Aside from Apple’s demands there are also technology restraints within the existing Verizon CDMA network, seeing how the current version of the iPhone only operates on the GSM networks. Even though the first generation iPhone does not support CDMA, the one planned for Europe later this year may already support the CDMA technology. Another issue believed to be a hurdle in the iPhone on the Verizon network would be how Verizon likes to put their skin on their existing phone OS’s which Apple would probably not agree to, as it is slow & unstable. From what I have read, until Verizon converts to the WCDMA technology from the older, outdated CDMA Apple more than likely would not support Verizon.

So is there any hope to see the iPhone on Verizon? If Verizon upgraded to the 3G network model it would be able to support the iPhone GSM version, thus boosting the sales for Apple and actually have the potential to meet the sales goal for 2008 of 10 million iPhone sales! The sales figures in 2007 for the iPhone topped 1.1 million phones sold.

We have the technology. Behold, the brand new iPhone 3G! In all its wonder, this new piece of equipment has single-handedly revolutionized cell phones now and forever. With more tricks and gimmicks than one could learn to use in a lifetime. It wouldn’t surprise me if it could keep you alive underwater!

But like almost every brand new technology these days, there are bound to be bugs involved. And this time, the iPhone 3G contains the whole colony. Widespread around the country (and around the world) is a panic of disappointment in the almighty iPhone and its lack of quality and reliability. Not only is it neither of those, there have also been complaints about almost every aspect of the phone. Just to list a few iPhone complaints:

•    The iPhone 3G doesn’t ring in sleep mode
•    It can’t sync notes except for using a web-based application which slows it down
•    Pulling up contacts to make a call slows the iPhone down immensely
•    Very hard to select text; even with an application that lets you copy, cut and paste
•    Notes are sometimes completely deleted one letter at a time if you hit Backspace
•    No removable battery – Must send to Apple to replace

But these are just some of the petty bugs that have been exposed about the iPhone. The main problems with the phone are of much greater importance. For example, the battery life is considered to be far below average and inferior to other cell phones that have been on the market for the past 5 years.

The lack of reception in certain areas has also been one of the largest topics of argument in iPhone complaint forums all over the web. One unsatisfied customer (from www.alliphonecomplaints.com) Liza reports, “The AT&T signal bars now indicate the phone receives the highest signal in my home….but the calls invariably drop out. I can’t begin to say how frustrating that is!!! I could kick myself for buying this piece of…so I can dump the phone”.

The customer service provided by AT&T is said to be horrendous as well. Not to mention a hundred iPhone complaints but one new customer said, “I had the phone less than 24 hours and AT&T wouldn’t replace it” (www.alliphonecomplaints.com). Originally, there was only one company providing service for the iPhone (AT&T). Can you say ‘monopoly’? Of course, now that problem has been fixed but this is just another issue going to show how many problems surround this new piece of technology. I could go on and on for light years about how many different complaints there have been regarding the new iPhone but it all boils down to one important understanding:

Overall, iPhone 3G is more of a toy than a useful tool that can be reliably used for conducting business. So if you love playing games, designing iPhone apps, and surfing the web to find weather stats in 4,901 different time zones, the iPhone 3G is perfect for you. But if you want reliability, great reception everywhere, great customer service and a flexible and competitive service plan, your best bet is to simply go with an alternative.
